Written By
Jamie Kuei

Curtains are traditionally a decorative, albeit functional, element. The supportive characters in a space, much like accessories to one's outfit - they add flavors, and layer nuances to enhance a story, but they are not always essential. In this story, the curtains take center stage as the transformative and dynamic architectural element - moving walls.

Finalizing the finishing details is essential for such a central and extensive element of a space, a myriads of scenarios are considered during this extensive process - touch, presentation, fluidity, multi-functionality, and cohesiveness.

At such scale, every small variation will create distinct looks of the finished work, and as a result, not only is the variety of rivets chosen important, but the sizes, the repeating pattern, and especially the spacing are equally serious.

Pleats are considered to as a playful alternative to flat panels. Inverted Box Pleats and Double-European Pleats are tested here.

Touch is at the forefront of consideration when it comes treating the panels for protection and longevity. These soft structures require human hands to move and adjust, with the most play at the end of the curvatures where walls carve out dressing rooms corners. Wax and aerosol fabric protectants are tested separately and together, isolating the hem or extending beyond it to examine effectiveness, color changes and fabric feel.
